Where “whoaaa” says it all.

First Nations people have always been here, with oral traditions and archaeological evidence tracing Indigenous presence back more than 12,000 years. 

For generations, people followed the seasons, knowing the land, rivers and mountains, and where to find what they needed to live. Today, the Yukon is home to 14 distinct First Nations, each with its own history, language, traditions and connection to the land. Their cultures continue to thrive, from traditional arts and storytelling to life on the land, community leadership and tourism. Eleven of the 14 Nations have signed Self-Government agreements, bringing their own priorities and knowledge to the future of their communities.

As you travel through the Yukon, take time to learn about the Nations whose traditional territories you’re visiting. Each has its own stories, places and perspectives to share. There’s a lot to discover here, and it starts with understanding whose home you’re visiting.
 

Dogsledding is a classic way to get around the Yukon. And a pretty great way to make a few new friends. Especially if you like your friends furry, four-legged, and very, very excited to see you. 

You can head out for a few hours or spend the night in the wilderness, with the northern lights putting on a show overhead.

Just hop in the sled, hang on, and let the dogs take it from there. 

Bring your sense of adventure, a camera, and a really, really warm coat.

The Yukon puts on one of nature’s greatest light shows, with the northern lights visible from mid-August to mid-April. For your best chance of catching them, plan for at least three nights, find some dark skies, and keep your eyes peeled between 10 pm and 3 am. 

You can chase the aurora on your own or join a guided tour, with everything from cozy cabins to dogsledding adventures. Just remember to dress in layers, bring a tripod if you’re hoping for that frame-worthy shot, and be prepared to stay up late. The sky doesn’t take requests, after all.

Sure, it’s tall. But here, it’s just another neighbour.

Kluane National Park and Reserve is home to Canada’s tallest mountains, including Mount Logan, and the world’s largest non-polar icefields. Basically, a little overachiever.

In winter, trade the usual slopes for snow-covered peaks, frozen landscapes and trails that take you deep into the wild. Keep your eyes peeled for Dall sheep and other wildlife making their way through the mountains. And if you think the views are impressive from the ground, just wait until you see them from above. Take a flight over the icefields, land on a glacier, and take it all in. Your friends are going to want proof.

Wind in your toque. Snow beneath your tires. Not a bad way to spend a winter's day.

Visit Whitehorse in the winter and you’re likely to see a few locals getting around town on fat bikes. Named for their thick, oversized tires, “fat bikes” are designed for ideal traction on snow. It’s a fantastic way to explore the wilderness and access some spots more easily than you would in the summer. Winter’s iced-over lakes mean you can bike straight over to the other side rather than hike around. Once you’re back in the treed trails, keep an eye out for wildlife tracks, like foxes and snowshoe hares.
