3-Day Kluane Glacier Backpacking Expedition (Slim's River (A'ay Chu) West)
A 3-day backpacking expedition through Kluane’s raw wilderness — wild trails, remote camps, and the mighty Kaskawulsh Glacier as your backdrop.
Three days in Kluane’s wild heart — hike the Slim’s River valley, camp by Canada Creek, and climb high on Observation Mountain for glacier views that steal your breath.
This is not just a hike — it’s a deep dive into one of Canada’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Over three days, we follow the Slim’s River (A’äy Chu) West trail, a classic Yukon route that winds along wide river terraces, through sandy flats, and across creeks that shift with the seasons. The scenery changes step by step: open tundra, sweeping riverbeds, and towering peaks guarding the horizon.
We’ll make camp near Canada Creek, a quiet riverside spot about halfway up the valley. From here, the real adventure begins — a summit push up Observation Mountain. There’s no official trail here, just route-finding and steady climbing beside creeks and ridgelines until the world suddenly opens up. At the top, you’re rewarded with one of the greatest views in the Yukon: the vast Kaskawulsh Glacier snaking through the valley, a frozen river of ice stretching as far as the eye can see.
Along the way, your ACMG-certified guide shares skills and stories — from reading terrain and crossing creeks safely to spotting wildlife sign and understanding the geology and history of Kluane. Grizzlies, moose, and Dall sheep roam this landscape, and we travel respectfully in their home.
This trip is challenging, raw, and unforgettable. You’ll carry your pack, cross cold creeks, and tackle rugged terrain. But you’ll also gain confidence in the backcountry, share campfire meals under Yukon skies, and walk away with a memory that feels bigger than words: standing high above the Kaskawulsh, with the North laid out below you.
