Stories of the North | A 14-Day Cultural Yukon to Arctic Expedition
Stories of the North | A 14-Day Cultural Yukon to Arctic Expedition
A basecamp expedition across the Yukon and Arctic — rooted in cultural experiences on the land, balanced with remote hiking, wild travel, and life on the road north
Step into a deeper kind of northern journey — a 14-day expedition from Whitehorse to the Arctic Ocean, where culture, landscape, and raw adventure come together along one of the most remote routes in the world.
Traveling in our converted school bus, we move north through changing territories and vast, untamed landscapes — from the coastal mountains of Carcross to the open valleys of Kluane, the jagged peaks of Tombstone, and the winding stretch of the Dempster Highway all the way to the Arctic Ocean. The bus is our mobile basecamp, carrying everything we need so we can camp wild, stay flexible, and fully immerse ourselves in the places we pass through.
Along the way, we spend time with local Indigenous partners who share their knowledge, stories, and connection to the land in their own way. These are not quick stops, but meaningful experiences — from cultural moments in Carcross and Whitehorse, to time spent with Kluane Outdoor Inspirations at Kluane Lake, to a multi-day journey from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk led by a local Inuvialuit-owned business. It’s a chance to better understand both the history and modern life of the North, through the people who live it.
But this is still very much an adventure. We hike ridgelines above Carcross, explore the wide open terrain of Kluane, and step into the raw tundra of Tombstone. We drive long, remote highways where the scale of the landscape really starts to sink in, and spend our days outside — moving, exploring, and going deeper into the places we reach.
Evenings shift with the journey. Sometimes it’s a fire under the midnight sun, boots still dusty from the trail. Sometimes it’s a quiet moment indoors, warming up and listening to stories that have been passed down for generations. Further north, it might be time on the water along the Mackenzie River, casting a line and watching the land stretch wider and wilder the further you go. Along the way, you might taste the North too — fresh fish, Arctic char, moose, or caribou — not as a set menu, but as part of what’s being shared in that moment.
This trip naturally draws people who are curious, open-minded, and excited to be part of something real. It’s not about luxury or comfort — it’s about experience, connection, and stepping into a different way of traveling. A small group, a long road, and a shared sense of adventure.
This isn’t a trip where you sit back and watch it go by. We camp in wild places, deal with weather, and cover serious ground as we make our way to the Arctic Ocean. But what stays with you are the moments in between — the conversations around the fire, the silence out on the tundra, and the feeling of being far, far from anywhere else.
You don’t just visit the North. You experience it.
