Travel tips 5 ways to dress like a Yukoner
Yukon style (yes, it’s a thing).
You’ll never mistake a Yukoner for a New Yorker and that’s how we like it. In a climate that provides arctic air and pacific heat, often in the same day, most Yukoners value functionality over fashion. But choosing comfort doesn’t always mean sacrificing style.
Experience the Yukon in true local fashion with these 5 tips:
Keep it casual
Leave your expensive jewellery, fancy ties, and posh shoes at home (with your doors locked, hopefully) because the Yukoner dress code is almost always casual.
The only suit you’ll need is what we call the Yukon Tuxedo: a pair of warm pants and wool flannel. The best part of this outfit is its versatility; you can wear it strolling around town or out on an adventurous hike.
Layer up
Like onions and ogres, Yukoners sport many layers. Layers prevent overheating when you’re active and they’re easy to peel off when heading indoors. More importantly, they literally save your skin by adding much-needed insulation against the winter cold.

By layering up with a thermal top and bottom, then adding a fleece sweater or hoodie underneath your outerwear, you too can transform into a Yukoner, ready to take on any winter challenge.

Protect your head
It’s rare to catch a Yukoner without some sort of head cover, especially during the winter when ear protection is crucial. From the ubiquitous toque and fur hats to wide-brimmed hats and baseball caps in the summer, Yukoners wear something on their head year round.
Our tip: trade in the hat for a helmet if you’re mountain biking on one of our many extraordinary trails. This way, you can stay stylish and safe.
Always accessorize
In the Yukon, accessories are less of a statement and more of a necessity. You can complete every outfit with warm socks, scarves, toques, and gloves. However, our go-to accessory is a good pair of sunglasses (polarized, of course).
They’re great for the sunny winters, but essential for summer UV protection, where the extended daylight can last for nearly 24 hours. So if you think your Mondays are long, put on your best sunnies and check out the famous midnight sun.
Utility is important
Finally, the key to nailing Yukoner style is looking relaxed but staying practical. Our last style tip is something most Yukoners can agree with: all hail the backpack!
From summer to sub-zero, backpacks carry all the goodies: snacks, water, sunscreen, and of course your camera to snap those peak selfies. To experience the pristine Yukon wilderness à la mode, we recommend a waterproof expedition backpack to carry all your camping supplies.
